- Soft Conditions Likely: Given the time of the year the Arc De Triomphe race is run at Longchamp, the ground tends to be on the softer side. This should always be in the back of your mind, especially if you are having an ante-post bet. You should try and back horses that handle testing conditions because more often than not the ground will be very soft or heavy and horses that relish fast ground get stuck in the mud.
- Previous Group 1 Form: The Arc de Triomphe race has been won by some of the best horses of all time. The roll call of previous Champions includes the likes of Enable, Treve and Dylan Thomas. 17 of the last 18 Arc winners had already tasted success at Group 1 level and that is an impossible stat to ignore.
- The Draw:Another especially important factor that you must take into consideration is the draw. 14 of the last 18 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe winners were drawn in stall 8 or lower. If you are drawn wide you need to break very well as it is very difficult to win from a wide position at Longchamp. Obviously, if you are having an ante-post bet you won’t know the draw. However, once it is made you can increase your stake if it is favourable to your horse (or lay off some of the bet if it isn’t).
- The Odds:For the most part the more fancied horses tend to do well in the Arc. 13 of the last 18 winners were sent off at odds of 10/1 or shorter. This would suggest that focusing on the favourites make sense but that isn’t always the case. If a horse ticks all the boxes outlined above and is a big price, they could still be worth backing. Waldgeist in 2019 was 20/1 yet he had Group 1 winning form, he was proven on soft ground and he had a nice draw in stall 3.

The Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe is a two-day festival held over the first weekend in October. It is a bumper two days of action with five Group races (including 3x Group 1s) on the Saturday and no less than seven Group 1 races on the Sunday. The undoubted feature is the Arc De Triomphe though on Sunday. With a first prize of over £3 million it is no surprise that so many owners, trainers and jockeys dream about winning it.
The Arc De Triomphe race distance is 2400m which is roughly around 1m 4f, similar in distance to the Epsom Derby. The Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe’s Biggest Shocks!
You don’t have to go back too far to find one of the biggest shock Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe results. John Gosden’s brilliant mare Enable won the race in 2017 and 2018 and she was bidding to make history by becoming the first-ever horse to win on three occasions. Most punters fancied her to do it and she was sent off the 1/2 favourite.
Frankie Dettori always had her in a good position and 2f out he pressed the button and she went to the front. It looked like the race was over as her fans began to cheer wildly. However, Waldgeist was biding his time under Pierre-Charles Boudot and his patience paid off.
The 16/1 shot, trained by Andre Fabre, hit the front 50 yards from home and Enable had no answers on the very soft ground. Waldgeist won going away and broke the hearts of Enable supporters. John Gosden’s mare isn’t retired yet though and a third Arc win could still yet be on the cards.
History of the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe
The first-ever Arc de Triomphe was won by a horse called ‘Comrade’ back in 1920. You can see the more recent victors in our past Arc winners section. The prize that day was 150,000 francs, a modest sum in comparison to what the winner gets these days (2,857,000 euros). It is the world’s richest flat race with a total prize fund of €5 million. The race is usually hosted by Longchamp racecourse in Paris, though there has been a few exceptions. In 1943/44 the race was run at Le Tremblay racecourse, while in 2016 and 2017 Chantilly was the venue for the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.
The trials for the Arc de Triomphe are usually run in September. Two of the most important races are the Prix Vermeille and in 2019 Waldgeist warmed up for the Arc by winning the Prix Foy.
