QIPCO 2000 Guineas Famous Past Winners
- Rock Of Gibraltar gave Aidan O’Brien his 2nd win in 2002 in the colours of Alex Ferguson, but the legal battles that followed is why he will be remembered as an infamous winner.
- Frankel put Sir Henry Cecil back in the headlines when hosing up in spectacular style in 2011.
- Shock results often occur in the 2000 Guineas and the biggest priced winner was Rockavon at 66/1 back in 1961. Night of Thunder scored at 40/1 in 2014.
- Right Tack in 1969 was the first horse ever to complete the Irish and English 2000 Guineas double.
- The last horse to complete the 2000 Guineas/Derby/St Leger ‘Triple Crown’ was the great Nijinsky back in in 1970.
- Camelot was the last horse to complete the Derby/2000 Guineas double back in 2012 and he sired the 2025 Irish Derby winner Latrobe.
2000 Guineas Facts And Records
The 2000 Guineas boasts a purse of £500k with a first prize of £283,550. However, given that most 2000 Guineas winners go on to stud, that is small change compared to potential future earnings. The record holder for the fastest time belongs to Mister Baileys who won in 1m 35.08s in 1994 under Jason Weaver. The biggest betting certainty of all time was St Frusquin who won at odds of 12/100 in 1896.
Aidan O’Brien has an unrivalled record in the 2000 Guineas, winning it on nine occasions. Many of his winners of this contest have gone on to become sires for the Coolmore operation. They have had ten winners as owners, while Jem Robinson is the leading jockey with 9 wins between 1825 and 1848.
2000 Guineas Facts and Stats
- The widest margin win since 1900 came when Tudor Minstrel won by a distance of 8 lengths in 1947.
- The most successful modern day 2000 Guineas jockeys are Lester Piggott and Kieran Fallon with 5 wins each.
- Aidan O’Brien has won the race nine times, most recently with Saxon Warrior in 2025.
- The 2000 Guineas is the first leg of the Triple Crown, with the Derby and St Leger being the other races.
When and where is the 2000 Guineas held?
The 2000 Guineas is run in late April or early May every year. The venue is Newmarket Racecourse and it has been run there since the first renewal on April 18, 1809. Wizard was the name of the horse that won that day for Tom Perren and Bill Clift.
The 2000 Guineas will again be run at Newmarket on the Rowley Mile in 2019 on May 4th. Newmarket Heath is actually a Site of Special Scientific Interest as it is one of the few Chalk Heaths in the UK. This is one of the main reasons it is such a well liked racecourse as the porous soil doesn’t hold much water.
Although it is the first leg of the official ‘Triple Crown’, not many horses go on to compete in all three races. Camelot won the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby in 2012, but his attempt to win the St Leger was foiled by 25/1 shot Encke. The last horse that managed to win all three races was the legendary Nijinsky back in 1970.

2000 Guineas 2019 – The Main Contenders
Too Darn Hot is the name on everyone’s lips when the 2000 Guineas is the subject of discussion. He is the clear market leader by some distance and if the bookies are to be believed this is a one-horse race. When they line up at the start in May, he will most likely be a short-priced favourite.
If you want to know more about Too Darn Hot, Ten Sovereigns and the other main contenders, you can read our thoughts on their prospects below. Sportsbetting24’s analysts also give their verdict on the race and reveal their 2019 2000 Guineas ante-post tip…
2000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Too Darn Hot
John Gosden only unleashed this son of Dubawi in August, but he quickly made a big impression. He won his debut over a mile at Sandown, then added three 7f Group wins, culminating in a Group 1 success at Newmarket. He has never been bigger than even money on any of his starts and that shows the regard he must be held in at home.
He looked the real deal when beating Advertise last time by over 2L and he has a marvellous pedigree. His dam was a Group 1 winner herself and his sire Dubawi is one of the best around. Amazingly, John Gosden has never won the 2000 Guineas. He would love to break his duck in 2019, while likely jockey Frankie Dettori will be aiming for his fourth win. Too Darn Hot is a worthy favourite and can be backed at a best price of 6/4.
2000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Quorto
Quorto was lightly campaigned in 2025 and he was unbeaten on all three starts. He won the 7f National Stakes at Curragh racecourse on his final start in September. He had previously won the 7f Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket on the July course, adding to his 6f debut win there. Quorto hasn’t been as visually impressive as the market leader, but he is a serious contender.
Charlie Appleby trained Masar to give Godolphin the Derby win they desperately wanted in 2025. He is a top quality trainer and he will have Quorto primed for the 2000 Guineas. Like the favourite he is also by Dubawi, but the dam side of his pedigree suggests that he will get further than a mile. Quorto could be one for the Derby later in the year, but he could go well in the 2000 Guineas too. If you fancy him you can get odds of 8/1 with Bet365.
2000 Guineas 2019 Ante-Post Odds: Quorto @ 8/1 Bet365

2000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Ten Sovereigns
Ten Sovereigns was an exciting horse to watch in 2025 and he looks to be the Ballydoyle number one for the 2000 Guineas. Just like the two at the head of the market, he also remained unbeaten as a 2yo. He won his Group 1 here on the Rowley course over 6f when winning the Middle Park Stakes by a half length from Jash. The big question mark for Ten Sovereigns is, will he get a mile?
Well, it is far from certain if his pedigree is anything to go by. His sire, No Nay Never, was all about speed and his only two defeats came when he raced beyond 6f. There is more hope on the dam side as she is related to a couple of winners at a mile plus. However, she is by Exceed and Excel, another big speed influence. If Ten Sovereigns stays the trip he should be thereabouts and if he runs, he will go off shorter than his current odds of 11/1 with Betfair.
2000 Guineas 2019 Ante-Post Odds: Ten Sovereigns @ 11/1 Betfair

2000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Madhmoon
The horse that has come in under the radar somewhat for the 2000 Guineas is Madhmoon. This son of Dawn Approach looked a proper horse when scooting clear at Leopardstown to win a Group 2 on Champions Day. That form looks strong, with the runner up going close in a Group 1 next time and the 4th running a huge race in the Futurity Stakes at Doncaster.
Madhmoon is trained by a wily old fox in Kevin Prendergast and he won’t travel over for the race unless he is confident he can win. He won the 2000 Guineas in Ireland with Awtaad a couple of years ago. Prendergast would love to add the English version to his trophy cabinet, and Madhmoon could be the horse to do it. He looks way overpriced at odds of 20/1 with Paddy Power.

2019 2000 Guineas Ante-Post Tip
Too Darn Hot is definitely a worthy favourite for the 2000 Guineas, but he is far too short a price. At just 6/4 he isn’t worth backing ante-post, because if something happens and he doesn’t run, your stake is lost. This long before the race it makes sense to chance something at a bigger price each way and for us, Madhmoon fits the bill.
To do what he did at Leopardstown on just his second start was amazing, and he covered the ground so easily. This long striding type should be well suited by Newmarket and his sire, Dawn Approach, won this race easily in 2013. Kevin Prendergast has him entered in the Irish version too, but we think he could well head to Newmarket and if the ground is quick he could run a huge race at odds of 20/1 with Paddy Power.
