Epsom Derby Facts And Records

With a purse of £1.5 million, the Epsom Derby is one of the most lucrative races in the UK. However, horses that triumph usually go on to generate multiples of the first prize of over £800k at stud. It is viewed by many as the ultimate test of a racehorse. The first ever Derby was run on Epsom Downs on May 4, 1780. Diomed won the first prize of £1065 and 15 shillings and he has gone down in racing folklore. The distance of the first ever Epsom Derby was a mile, but it was increased to 1m 4f in 1784.

The Epsom Derby was traditionally run on a Wednesday, up until 1995. Since 1996 it is run on the first Saturday in June. Legendary pilot Lester Piggott holds the record for Epsom Derby wins with 9. A trio of trainers have 7 wins: Robert Robson, John Porter and Fred Darling. The mighty Coolmore operation always target the race and they have won it 7 times.[select_bonuses object=”25″ bonus=”1212″][select_bonuses object=”10″ bonus=”1218″][select_bonuses object=”15″ bonus=”1400″]

Epsom Derby Facts and Stats

When and where is the Epsom Derby held?

Since 1996 the Epsom Derby has been held at Epsom Racecourse every year on the first Saturday in June. It previously was run on either the first Wednesday in June. During both World Wars, the race was run at Newmarket.

In 2019 The Derby will again be run at Epsom Downs racecourse. This year it will be run on Saturday, June 1 and the Epsom Oaks will be run on Friday, 31 May. It usually attracts a large number of spectators and Derby Day is viewed as an important date in the social calendar by many.

Only 12 horses ran in the 2024 Epsom Derby, compared to 18 in 2017. At the time of writing 338 horses were entered, so whittling down the field won’t be easy. Bookies already have prices available for the Epsom Derby and our horse racing analysts have studied the form.

2000 Guineas favourite, Too Darn Hot, is also at the head of the Epsom Derby betting market. He is the clear favourite but loads of other horses have realistic claims too. If you are considering having an Epsom Derby bet then you should check out some interesting Epsom Derby trends…

Epsom Derby 2019 – The Main Contenders

The market for the Epsom Derby will only really start to take shape after the opening few weeks of the season. The 2000 Guineas will give plenty of clues about what horses will be suited by the Epsom Derby test. It is also worth keeping an eye on the big Chester meeting, as Aidan O’Brien often unleashes some of his main hopes there.

Too Darn Hot is a warm favourite for the 2000 Guineas. He has been installed as favourite for the 2019 Epsom Derby too. His trainer, John Gosden, isn’t sure about his Derby credentials and either are we. You can read our thoughts on the main contenders for the 2019 Epsom Derby in the next section.

Epsom Derby 2019 Main Contenders: Too Darn Hot

Too Darn Hot is the hype horse of 2019 and is favourite for the 2000 Guineas and The Derby. He is unbeaten after four starts and he is extremely well related. He has taken every step up in class in his stride and the son of Dubawi has won at Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1 level. All those wins came over 7f though, and the Derby trip of 12f may be beyond him.

He has showed a proper turn of foot when winning his last couple of races. Too Darn Hot produced a sparkling performance in the Dewhurst last time out. It was his toughest test yet and he passed it with flying colours. His dam won a Group 1 over 12f, so there is hope he will stay in his pedigree. However, Dubawi’s progeny usually thrive over shorter and he hasn’t shape like a stayer. If you think Too Darn Hot will be too darn good for his rivals, you can get on at odds of 4/1 with Betfred.

Epsom Derby 2019 Main Contenders: Quorto

Next best in the betting for the 2019 Epsom Derby is Quorto. Godolphin won the race for the first time ever in 2024 with Masar. In Quorto, we think they have an outstanding chance of adding another. He is another son of Dubawi and he lowered the colours of Anthony Van Dyck on his final 2yo start in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh.

He is unbeaten in three starts at 6f/7f and we think he is going to be even better over further. His dam, Volume, was third in both the English and Irish Oaks, while her dam is a granddaughter of 20f Group 1 winner Victoire Bleue. If you, like us, think that he will be suited by the step up to 12f you can back him at odds of 16/1 with Unibet.

Epsom Derby 2019 Main Contenders: Anthony Van Dyck

The shortest priced entry from the all-conquering Aidan O’Brien yard is Anthony Van Dyck. O’Brien has an unbelievable record in the Epsom Derby and this fella is sired by his first winner in the race, Galileo. He is one of the most exposed of the favourites, running seven times as a 2yo. He only managed to win three of those, but he showed some serious form in defeat.

He was below par on his final start at the Breeders’ Cup. However, he is better judged on his fine second to Quorto in the 7f National Stakes. Anthony Van Dyck also ran well behind Too Darn Hot at Newmarket in the Dewhurst. The worry for his supporters is the lack of stamina on the dam side of his pedigree. It is all about speed, so his ability to stay 12f has to be a major doubt. If you think he will get the trip, you can back him at 16/1 with William Hill.

Epsom Derby 2019 Main Contenders: Japan

The final main contender we will look at is another Ballydoyle inmate. Japan is also a son of Galileo but he is more stoutly bred than Anthony Van Dyck. He needed every inch of the stiff mile to get up to beat Mount Everest at Naas last season. The way he finished the race off suggested that he will be well suited by the Epsom Derby trip of 12f.

His full sister Secret Gesture was runner up in the 2013 Epsom Oaks and his dam, Shastye, won at 13f. She is a half sister to Arc winner Sagamix, so on breeding Japan looks every inch a middle distance horse. He is also a possible runner in the 2000 Guineas and if he runs well in that, his current Epsom Derby odds of 20/1 with Boylesports won’t last very long.

2019 Epsom Derby Ante-Post Tip

It is still very early days as far as the 2019 Epsom Derby is concerned. Choosing a selection at this stage isn’t easy, but we think the value lies with Quorto. The way he won the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh suggested to us that 12f would be right up his street. He was pulling away from Anthony Van Dyck at the finish of that 7f contest. Over 12f, we think he would beat that rival even more handsomely.

As we outlined earlier, Quorto’s pedigree also suggests that he will be even better when tackling longer distances. His trainer, Charlie Appleby, delivered Godolphin’s first ever Derby winner last year. He will be eager to repeat the trick with Quorto, and we think he represents real each way value at odds of 16/1 with Unibet.
