Royal Ascot Facts And Records

If you consider that a total of 39 Group 1 races are run in the UK every year, the fact that Royal Ascot hosts 13 of those shows just how important this meeting is. It is basically the Olympics of flat racing, but thankfully we only have to wait a year between each meeting instead of four!

The usual suspects like Gosden, O’Brien and Stoute usually have lots of runners (and winners). The jockeys to follow include Ryan Moore, Frankie Dettori, William Buick and Oisin Murphy. Coolmore, Godolphin and Qatar Racing have dominated in recent years, and we reveal some interesting Royal Ascot facts and records below.

Royal Ascot Records And Stats

  • Ryan Moore was the top jockey at Royal Ascot 2021 with 5 winners.
  • Master trainer Aidan O’Brien was crowned leading trainer with 4 winners on countback. John Gosden also had 4 winners, but O’Brien had one more 2nd.
  • Moore has now ridden 50 winners at Royal Ascot, while O’Brien has trained 65
  • In the blue riband races the big guns like O’Brien, Stoute, Gosden, Appleby and Bin Suroor are usually the trainers to follow.
  • One of the biggest upsets at Royal Ascot came in the 2008 Windsor Castle Stakes when rank outsider Flashmans Papers scored for John Best and Steve Drowne at 100/1.

Royal Ascot Legends Of The Past

The very best flat horses usually retire at a young age to go to stud. For this reason, many flat horses do not gather the same sort of following as jumps horses who are normally around for a lot longer. However, some household names have scored at Royal Ascot in the past and their names will never be forgotten. You can find out more about some of the most legendary winners at Royal Ascot below…

Royal Ascot Famous Past Winners

  • Shergar won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1981 before famously going on to be stolen and most likely shot dead by an armed gang.
  • Frankel caught the imagination of the British racing public and he was a dual Royal Ascot winner for the late Sir Henry Cecil and Tom Queally.
  • Galileo scored for Aidan O’Brien at Royal Ascot in 2001 and he has gone on to become a dominant flat sire for the Coolmore operation.
  • Another legendary Royal Ascot winner was Yeats, a smashing stayer who made the Ascot Gold Cup his own between 2006-09.
  • Enable definitely deserves a mention, winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2017 before going on to win a couple of Arcs and also at the Breeder’s Cup.
  • Double Trigger was the last horse to complete the British Stayers’ Triple Crown in 1995, winning the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup.

When and where is Royal Ascot held?

The Royal Ascot meeting is held at Ascot Racecourse in London. Located only a few miles from the Royal residence in Windsor Castle, the meeting is always attended daily by the Queen or another member of the Royal Family. Over 300,000 racing fans attended over the five days in 2021 and even bigger crowds are expected this year.

The Ascot Gold Cup is the centrepiece of the Royal Ascot meeting and that is run on the Thursday. There are a plethora of Group 1s, 13 in total to be exact, but there is one feature race every day. On Day 1 it is The Queen Anne Stakes, Day 2 is The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, Day 3 is the Ascot Gold Cup, Day 4 is The Commonwealth Cup and on Saturday the big race is the Diamond Jubilee.

Tuesday, June 18th is the day all the fun starts at Royal Ascot 2019. The meeting will be shown live on both ITV and Sky Sports Racing. You can also stream every race live with certain bookies like Betfair and Coral, if you place a bet. With a total of 30 races over five days there is no shortage of action for racing fans at Royal Ascot. 13 of those races are Group 1s and they usually attract the best flat horses on the planet. Raiders from France, Ireland, Australia and the USA will be looking to take on the home team at Royal Ascot in 2019. Our racing analysts have looked at the five daily feature races, and you can check out their Ascot tips below…

Royal Ascot Tips Day 1-Queen Anne Stakes

The Royal Ascot meeting kicks off on Tuesday with an absolute stormer of a race. The Queen Anne is a mile race for horses aged 4yo or older and Accidental Agent sprang a big surprise at 33/1 in 2021. Some bookmakers are already offering betting on the Queen Anne Stakes and Laurens is sure to be near the head of the market. Karl Burke’s teak tough filly can be backed at a best price of 10/1 (11.0) with Bet365.

She looks to hold every chance and if she lines up, she will go off a lot shorter. Those looking for some each way value could do worse than taking a chance on Accidental Agent. Eve Johnson-Houghton’s son of Delegator won the race in 2021 and has yet to run a poor race at Ascot. He is sure to be primed for a repeat bid and he looks an excellent each way ante-post bet.

Royal Ascot Tips Day 2-Prince Of Wales’s Stakes

The highlight on Day 2 of Royal Ascot is the 9f Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. It has been won by some quality horses down through the years, including the likes of Dubai Millennium, Highland Reel and Nayef. In 2021 it was Poet’s Word who stormed to glory for Sir Michael Stoute and James Doyle and that was Stoute’s third win in the race.

At the time of writing, no bookmaker had odds available for the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. In the modern era, Saeed Bin Suroor has been the leading trainer with four wins. Stoute, O’Brien and Gosden are hot on his heels with three victories apiece. Italian jockey, Frankie Dettori, is the leading modern day rider with three triumphs, though he has a long way to go to catch the all time leading jockey Morny Cannon who has won it six times.

Royal Ascot Tips Day 3-Ascot Gold Cup

This 20f Group 1 is the showpiece race of the week at Royal Ascot. This is the contest that all the top stayers want to win. Last year Stradivarius saw off the challenge of Vazirabad to seal a thrilling win and he will surely be back to defend his crown in the 2019 Ascot Gold Cup. Ante-post odds are already available with some firms and he is a best price of 11/4 with William Hill.

At this early stage, he does look the most likely winner, but we think there is better value to be found elsewhere. Vazirabad pushed him all the way in 2021, going down by less than a length. Alain De Royer-Dupre’s 7yo son of Manduro is a wonderfully consistent horse.

Royal Ascot Tips Day 4- Commonwealth Cup

On the penultimate day of Royal Ascot the 6f Group 1 Commonwealth Cup is always an intriguing race. Some of the speediest sprinters in the world will battle it out for a first prize of over £280k. It is restricted to 3yos only and was only founded in 2015 when Muhaarar won for Charles Hills and Dane O’Neill. Ten Sovereigns heads the market at a best price of 5/1 with BetVictor. He is a serious sprinter, unbeaten after three starts. If he has trained on, he is the one they all have to beat.

One horse that the bookies have overlooked time and again is Signora Cabello. Trained by John Quinn, this dashing daughter of Camacho scored at 25/1 in the Queen Mary here last year. She pushed Pollyanna all the way in the Prix Morny at Deauville and with a 3lb allowance we think she could follow in Quiet Reflection’s hoof steps and become the second filly to win the Commonwealth Cup.

Royal Ascot Tips Day 5- Diamond Jubilee Stakes

Saturday is the closing day of the Royal Ascot meeting and the final Group 1 of the week is the 6f Diamond Jubilee Stakes. This thrilling sprint is restricted to horses aged 4yo or older and it was granted Group 1 status in 2002. Some superb sprinters have scored in this race down through the years, including the likes of Black Caviar, Society Rock and Choisir.

Aidan O’Brien is best known for his exploits with middle distance horses, but he won the 2021 Diamond Jubilee Stakes with Merchant Navy. Vincent O’Brien (5 wins) and Lester Piggott (10 wins) hold the records for most wins by a trainer and jockey. At the time of writing, no ante-post Diamond Jubilee odds were available. However, we will update this page with our 2019 Royal Ascot Diamond Jubilee Stakes tip as soon as prices are online.

2019  Ante-Post Royal Ascot Tips

The 2019 Royal Ascot meeting promises to be one of the best yet. A stellar cast of equine superstars will grace the stage at Ascot and there will be lots of hard luck stories mixed in with fairy-tale successes.
