When and where is the 1000 Guineas held?

Newmarket is the focal point of flat racing in the UK and the 1000 Guineas is run on Newmarket Racecourse. The testing Rowley Mile is the track used for the race and horses need a mix of speed and stamina to win. The first ever renewal of the 1000 Guineas was in 1814 when Charlotte won for Tom Perren and Bill Cluft.

This year the 1000 Guineas will be run at Newmarket on Saturday, May 5th, 2019. The race distance is a mile and the winner takes home a nice prize of £283,550. QIPCO are the current sponsors of the race and they also sponsor the 2000 Guineas, run on the previous day. We also have a 2000 Guineas betting guide and you should make sure to check that out too.

The 1000 Guineas is a Classic in its own right, but plenty of trainers use it as a stepping stone. If a horse stays on late over 8f in the 1000 Guineas they will usually be stepped up in trip in the Oaks. Alternatively, if a horse doesn’t get home they will be dropped in trip and targeted at shorter races.

1000 Guineas 2019 – The Main Contenders

It is only a few months until the 2019 1000 Guineas and already the market is taking shape. Plenty of betting sites have ante post odds available. However, even at this early stage it pays to shop around, especially if you are having an each way bet. Unibet are one of the only betting sites paying 1/4 odds on each way 1000 Guineas ante-post bets. That is why they are our number one 1000 Guineas bookie.

At the time of writing, the 1000 Guineas looked wide open. It is 10/1 the field, so pinpointing the winner by using the market isn’t really an option. Our analysts have looked at the form, so If you want to know more about the main contenders for the 1000 Guineas check out our resident racing experts’ views below…

1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Just Wonderful

As we outlined earlier, Aidan O’Brien is usually worth following in the 1000 Guineas. His daughter of Dansili, Just Wonderful, currently heads the market at odds of 10/1. This filly has won three of her seven starts and took the 7f Group 2 Rockfel here last season. She went on to finish a very creditable 4th at the Breeders’ Cup over a mile on ground easy enough for her.

As one would expect with a horse from this yard, she is bred in the purple. Dansili is an outstanding sire and her Montjeu dam is out of a half sister to the mighty Galileo. She will need good ground to be seen at her best, so keep an eye on the weather close to the race. She is a best price of 10/1 with Unibet and if she wins her seasonal comeback, expect those odds to tumble.

1000 Guineas 2019 Ante-Post Odds: Just Wonderful @ 10/1 Unibet

18+ www.begambleaware.org Minimum deposit £10. You must wager your bonus money 3x to make it withdrawable at minimum odds of 1.40 (2/5) in Sportsbook, 25x for Casino. Bonus will expire after 30 days of opt-in. Further T&Cs Apply.

1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Newspaperofrecord

It isn’t very often that American horses are sighted in the 1000 Guineas. However, there is a real chance that Newspaperofrecord could feature in 2019. If she does, she will undoubtedly be one of the main protagonists. She is unbeaten after three starts and she signed off in style last season, winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by almost 7L.

She left Just Wonderful trailing in her wake by almost 8L that day and it is hard to see the O’Brien filly turning the form around. Chad Brown’s filly has a lovely blend of stamina and speed in her pedigree. She is by Lope De Vega and her Holy Roman Emperor dam is a half sister to Irish derby winner Latrobe. It remains to be seen if she will run in the 1000 Guineas, but if she does she won’t be as big as the 12/1 currently on offer from 888sport.

1000 Guineas 2019 Ante-Post Odds: Newspaperofrecord @ 12/1 888sport

18+, New customers only – Minimum deposit of £10 using deposit code 30f - A qualifying bet is a ‘real money’ stake of at least €10 (£20 e/w) placed on any sports markets - Minimum odds of 1/2 (1.5) - Free bets credited upon qualifying bet settlement and expire after 7 days - Free bet stakes not included in returns - Deposit method and withdrawal restrictions apply - full T&C’s apply

1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Fairyland

Aidan O’Brien has another fascinating contender for the 1000 Guineas in Fairyland. This daughter of Kodiac has  won 4 of her 5 starts and landed the Cheveley Park over 6f at Newmarket on her final run in 2019. She beat The Mackem Bullet by a neck in that 6f Group 1, while the margin was a nose when they met at Goodwood. Her sole defeat came behind Main Edition and La Pelosa at Royal Ascot.

The worry for supporters of this filly is whether she will see out the stiff mile at Newmarket. Her pedigree is all about speed and stamina has to be a big doubt. She has yet to race at beyond 6f so her first run back should reveal a lot. If it turns out she does stay a mile she will be very dangerous, as she possesses plenty of speed. If you fancy her you can get on at odds of 14/1 with Ladbrokes.

1000 Guineas 2019 Ante-Post Odds: Fairyland @ 14/1 Ladbrokes

18+ New UK+IRE customers. Paypal and certain deposit types and bet types excluded. Min £10 bet within 14 days of account reg at min odds 1/2 = 3 x £10 free bets. Free bets valid for 4 days on sports, stake not returned, restrictions apply. T&Cs apply.

1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Skitter Scatter

One filly that looks massively overpriced for the 1000 Guineas is Skitter Scatter. Paddy Prendergast and John Oxx have joined forces and this filly will now run in Oxx’s name. In our opinion, this daughter of Scat Daddy was the best 2yo in Ireland in 2019. She is teak tough and won four times from seven runs. She improved with every outing and signed off with an impressive win in the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes over 7f.

She has yet to race over the 1000 Guineas distance of 8f, but she is bred to get the trip. Her half sister won a stakes race in the USA over a mile, and her dam was a 10f winner. She is also a half sister to Dewhurst winner Intense Focus, so this filly lacks nothing on the breeding front. Connections may choose to campaign her in Ireland, but if she travels over for the 1000 Guineas she could make a mockery of her odds of 16/1 with BetVictor.

2019  Ante-Post 1000 Guineas Tips

It is still early days where the 1000 Guineas is concerned and selecting an ante-post bet isn’t easy. Remember, if your horse doesn’t run you lose your stake with ante-post bets. That makes them very risky, but the odds are usually very rewarding. At the current prices, we think Skitter Scatter represents the best value.

This filly is tough as old boots and she not only travels well, she also has a serious turn of foot. Oxx and Prendergast will be looking to make a statement in their first season together and Skitter Scatter could put their new venture on the map. At odds of 16/1 with BetVictor, Skitter Scatter is our each way ante-post tip for the 1000 Guineas.
