The purse for the 1000 Guineas is £500k and the winner walks away with a cool £283k. It is the opening leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, which also includes the St Leger and Epsom Oaks. Only two horses have completed this feat in the post-war era, Meld in 1955 and Oh So Sharp in 1985.

Newmarket is the focal point of flat racing in the UK and the 1000 Guineas is run on Newmarket Racecourse. The testing Rowley Mile is the track used for the race and horses need a mix of speed and stamina to win. As we outlined earlier, Aidan O’Brien is usually worth following in the 1000 Guineas. His daughter of Dansili, Just Wonderful, currently heads the market at odds of 10/1. This filly has won three of her seven starts and took the 7f Group 2 Rockfel here last season. She went on to finish a very creditable 4th at the Breeders’ Cup over a mile on ground easy enough for her.
As one would expect with a horse from this yard, she is bred in the purple. Dansili is an outstanding sire and her Montjeu dam is out of a half sister to the mighty Galileo. She will need good ground to be seen at her best, so keep an eye on the weather close to the race. 1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Newspaperofrecord
It isn’t very often that American horses are sighted in the 1000 Guineas. However, there is a real chance that Newspaperofrecord could feature in 2019. If she does, she will undoubtedly be one of the main protagonists. She is unbeaten after three starts and she signed off in style last season, winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by almost 7L.
She left Just Wonderful trailing in her wake by almost 8L that day and it is hard to see the O’Brien filly turning the form around. Chad Brown’s filly has a lovely blend of stamina and speed in her pedigree. She is by Lope De Vega and her Holy Roman Emperor dam is a half sister to Irish derby winner Latrobe. It remains to be seen if she will run in the 1000 Guineas, but if she does she won’t be as big as the 12/1 currently on offer from 888sport.

1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Fairyland
Aidan O’Brien has another fascinating contender for the 1000 Guineas in Fairyland. This daughter of Kodiac has won 4 of her 5 starts and landed the Cheveley Park over 6f at Newmarket on her final run in 2025. She beat The Mackem Bullet by a neck in that 6f Group 1, while the margin was a nose when they met at Goodwood. Her sole defeat came behind Main Edition and La Pelosa at Royal Ascot.
The worry for supporters of this filly is whether she will see out the stiff mile at Newmarket. Her pedigree is all about speed and stamina has to be a big doubt. She has yet to race at beyond 6f so her first run back should reveal a lot. If it turns out she does stay a mile she will be very dangerous, as she possesses plenty of speed.
1000 Guineas 2019 Main Contenders: Skitter Scatter
One filly that looks massively overpriced for the 1000 Guineas is Skitter Scatter. Paddy Prendergast and John Oxx have joined forces and this filly will now run in Oxx’s name. In our opinion, this daughter of Scat Daddy was the best 2yo in Ireland in 2025. She is teak tough and won four times from seven runs. She improved with every outing and signed off with an impressive win in the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes over 7f.
She has yet to race over the 1000 Guineas distance of 8f, but she is bred to get the trip. Her half sister won a stakes race in the USA over a mile, and her dam was a 10f winner. She is also a half sister to Dewhurst winner Intense Focus, so this filly lacks nothing on the breeding front. Connections may choose to campaign her in Ireland, but if she travels over for the 1000 Guineas she could make a mockery of her odds of 16/1 with BetVictor.
