Epsom Oaks Facts And Records

Epsom is the spiritual home of the Oaks but there have been a few occasions when it was run elsewhere. During World War 1 and World War 2 the race was run as the New Oaks Stakes at Newmarket. The Epsom Oaks was first run in 1779 and was won by a filly called Bridget, owned by the 12th Earl of Derby. The race is named after an estate leased by the first winning owner.

The late Sir Henry Cecil will always be closely associated with the Epsom Oaks. He won it on eight occasions, his last triumph coming in 2007 with Light Shift. Aidan O’Brien is hot on his heels with seven wins. Frank Buckle won the race 9 times between 1797-1823 and he has two more wins that Lester Piggott.

Epsom Oaks Facts and Stats

When is The Oaks held?

The Epsom Oaks is the second classic of the season for the fillies and it is run annually, usually in early June. The race will be run for the 240th time this season. It is always run the day before the Epsom Derby and the trip is 12 furlongs. In 2019 The Oaks will be run on May 31st and it should be a magnificent renewal.

The Epsom track is undulating and tests all the key attributes a good racehorse should have. To win The Oaks you need a filly with the perfect blend of balance, stamina and speed. The most impressive recent winner was undoubtedly Enable, and she did it in record time.

It is still early days as far as The Oaks are concerned when it comes to having a bet. The market is wide open and no real favourite has emerged yet. However, our experts have had a good look at the recent history of the Epsom Oaks and you can check out the trends they noticed below…

Trends are a useful tool for punters who are trying to pick out the winner of the Epsom Oaks. Certain patterns can aid in narrowing the field and some profitable punters swear by them. One useful tip is to look for horses staying on well in the 1000 Guineas. The step up in trip can often suit in The Oaks and you will usually get decent odds.

Epsom Oaks Betting Sites

Perhaps the most important decision you will make is choosing your Epsom Oaks betting site. It is important to choose wisely as it will impact on your potential profits (or help to limit losses). Look out for bookies with good welcome offers and plentiful betting promotions for existing customers. Unibet and Coral both score well in those departments.

It is absolutely key to get the best price for your Epsom Oaks selection. When it comes to value for ante-post bets, bet365 are hard to beat. Also, they were one of only two betting sites offering 1/4 odds for ante post each way Epsom Oaks bets at the time of writing. Unibet was the other.

Epsom Oaks 2019 – The Main Contenders

As the betting shows, the 2019 Epsom Oaks is wide open at this early stage. The big market moves won’t come until the flat season is back in full swing. However, there is plenty of two year old form to get stuck into. Pedigrees can also be a good indication of how a horse will fare as a three year old.

Iridessa is just about shading favouritism for the Epsom Oaks after her Group 1 win at Newmarket in the Fillies’ Mile. Joseph O’Brien’s filly will have plenty of competition, especially from his father Aidan. Just Wonderful looks to be his main hope and we discuss the chances of the main contenders for the 2019 Epsom Oaks below…

Epsom Oaks 2019 Main Contenders: Iridessa

This daughter of Derby winner Ruler Of The World improved massively to win her last start at Newmarket. She seemed to relish the step up to a mile and she appreciated the good to firm ground too. Her trainer Joseph O’Brien immediately suggested that she was an Oaks filly after that win.

However, her previous form wasn’t great and it remains to be seen if she will back it up. Her pedigree offers hope that stepping up to the Oaks distance of 1m 4 furlongs will really suit. Her dam is a half-sister to a 1m 5 furlong winner and her sire looks certain to be a major stamina influence. If she has trained on and backs up her Newmarket form, she looks certain to be a leading contender at odds of 16/1 with Unibet.

Epsom Oaks 2019 Main Contenders: Just Wonderful

Aidan O’Brien has dominated this race in recent seasons and Just Wonderful looks his leading light in 2019. This beautifully bred daughter of Dansili won the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes over 7f last season. She followed that up with a fine effort behind Newspaperofrecord when 4th at the Breeders’ Cup. A slow start proved costly that day, but she did keep on well close home.

Just Wonderful is a daughter of Irish Oaks winner Wading and Dansili has produced plenty of top class middle distance performers. The worry for supporters of Just Wonderful is that she has underperformed on more than one occasion. She will have to be at her sparkling best to land the Epsom Oaks.

Epsom Oaks 2019 Main Contenders: Hermosa

Another of the main contenders for the 2019 Epsom Oaks is Hermosa, an Aidan O’Brien trained filly. By super sire Galileo, this filly was there or thereabouts in some quality contests as a 2yo. She got to within 2 lengths of Iridessa in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket and she also went close in a Group 1 at Chantilly on her final start. Her sole win at pattern level came in a 7f Group 2 at the Curragh.

Her Pivotal dam has produced some seriously talented horses and her full brother and sister were top class. Hydrangea won a couple of Group 1s, including one at 12f, and The United States was a Group 1 winner in Australia at 10f. Hermosa didn’t look a stayer as a 2yo, but she could easily strengthen up during the winter months. You can back Hermosa at odds of 25/1 with BetVictor.

Epsom Oaks 2019 Main Contenders: Goddess

At this early stage, it is hard to look past Aidan O’Brien if you are searching for The Oaks winner. He has yet another main contender in Goddess, an exceptionally bred daughter of Camelot. This filly has seen the track just three times and was well beaten twice. However, the way she won her maiden at Leopardstown was amazing to watch and she is better than she showed on her last run.

That below par effort behind Skitter Scatter looked too bad to be true, and she hasn’t been seen since. However, given her pedigree, she cannot be discounted for the Epsom Oaks. Her dam, Cherry Hinton, has produced a multitude of marvelous mares, including Athena, Bracelet and Wading (the dam of Just Wonderful). It would be no surprise if Goddess proved to be just as good as her siblings. She could be a shrewd each way ante-post bet at odds of 25/1 with bet365.

2019 Epsom Oaks Ante-Post Tip

At the time of writing, there was still a long time to go until the Epsom Oaks so trying to find the winner is far from an easy task. However, we are never afraid to put our necks on the line and we think Goddess could be the one to be on. This filly has a pedigree to die for and she looked special when hosing up on her second start at Leopardstown.

She did flop behind Skitter Scatter next time, but surely there was an underlying reason for that run. Her pedigree suggests that she will improve massively as a 3yo and Camelot is quickly making a name for himself as a top class sire. Coolmore will be keen for him to add an Oaks winner to his CV as a stallion and at odds of 25/1 with bet365, Goddess is our each way pick.
