Features of the Best Betting App

With so many different types of betting apps out there, there’s clearly no one, single best betting app. This is why we’ve narrowed it down to a top 7 list, though we’d also like to empower our readers by giving them the tools to make their own decisions, regardless of how new or experienced they are to betting apps.

When it comes to evaluating betting apps, we look at a number of different aspects to make sure that all of our recommendations are unbiased and based on the factors that actually affect users. Here’s what to look out for before making a final decision on a betting app:

  • User Interface
This is something that a lot of punters might not think about until it’s too late and they’ve already signed up and made their first deposit. When we talk about user interface, we’re talking about things like how easy it is to place bets. On some betting apps, that could be as simple as a single tap or two, whereas on other apps, it might take up to five or six taps.
A betting app with a good user interface is one where we find everything we look for without too much difficulty, one that simplifies processes as much as possible, and one that is generally pleasing to the eye. An app that looks like a neon hellscape might attract your attention for a second, but most punters wouldn’t be able to sit and use it over an entire afternoon.
  • Navigation
This is closely related to user interface, but we’re looking at how easy it is to make your way around the app to the features you’re looking for. From signing in, how easy is it to find the deposit function? Can we find a specific match without having to scroll through endless lists? Does the app clearly distinguish between matches that are live and ongoing and upcoming matches?
You’d imagine that in the year 2020 there’d be no issues with things like this anymore, as it’s not like betting apps are a new concept. Unfortunately, however, there are still apps floating around out there which are extremely messy and confusing to navigate, and we’d rather steer clear of those.
  • Odds / Betting Markets
When it comes to evaluating betting apps and sites, this is an obvious factor. A betting app can have the most gorgeous, minimalistic user interface out there, but if punters aren’t being provided with good value odds and a decent selection of betting markets, it doesn’t do much to actually help your betting.
The odds and betting markets, in the vast majority of cases, are exactly the same on betting apps as they are on the desktop site, so this is one of the easiest ones to check. If you’re not sure how to tell whether odds and betting markets measure up to the competition, take a look at our in-depth, honest betting site reviews, where we’ve already done this for you.
  • Bonus Offers
While mobile-exclusive bonuses are a lot rarer than they used to be, punters need to make sure that the same welcome bonuses and offers that are available on the desktop site are available on the betting app too. In most cases, this shouldn’t be an issue, but we always recommend checking. Plus, you might strike lucky and find a mobile-exclusive offer.
More importantly, though, is to assess the sign up bonus and offers available. Just like when assessing a desktop betting site, you should always read the terms and conditions before activating a bonus. You’ll need to look at things like wagering requirements, odds restrictions, and how long you have to redeem your bonus.
Again, if you’re not sure how to go about comparing these kinds of things, just take a look at our sportsbook reviews where we’ve already done all this work for you.
  • Flexibility (iOS/Android)
Once we’ve looked at the absolute core basics listed above, we now need to look at who can actually use the apps. For those that may not be aware, iPhones and iPads run completely different apps to Android phones and tablets.
The most logical thing for sportsbooks to do is release apps for both iOS and Android, however that isn’t always the case. We often see sportsbooks releasing a betting app on just one of the platforms, leaving users of the other platform to use the mobile-web version of their site.
Take a look at what devices you own and would like to use for betting (this will generally be your personal mobile phone), and make sure that the sportsbooks you’re considering do indeed actually have an app that works on your device. For example, if you have a Samsung phone, then a bookie that has only released apps for iPhone won’t really be that suitable for you, unless you’re happy to use the mobile-web site.
  • Additional Features - Cashout, Odds Boosts, Live Streaming, etc.
If everything above checks out, now it’s time to think about personal preference. Are you a frequent user of the cash out feature? Are you mad about live betting and want to be able to live stream the match in the betting app as you bet?
This is where you can start getting specific, and can find the betting app that has the particular collection of features that matches you and your betting style.

Android

If you own any smartphone made since about 2015 or so that isn’t an Apple iPhone, then it almost definitely runs Android. Android is the name the operating system (like “Windows”) that your phone or tablet runs on. This is powered by Google, and includes a whole host of features that keep the platform secure, safe, and full of utility.

Android betting apps are popular amongst sportsbooks because they can be installed on devices even when the apps can’t be listed in the Google Play Store. We have a full guide on how to do this below.

Google Play Store

This is Google’s official, digital storefront for Android apps and other Google Services. If you live in certain regions, such as the UK, then you can find betting apps listed here alongside all manner of other kinds of apps.

All you need to do is search for the name of the sportsbook, and you can download the betting app in just two or three taps. This is, by and far, the most recommended way to install betting apps onto your Android devices.

iOS

Where Android is available on devices made by dozens of different brands, iOS is far more exclusive. iOS is the mobile operating system designed by Apple and is available exclusively on Apple devices such as the iPhone and the iPad.

Betting apps designed for iOS are also relatively common, as Apple devices are some of the most common devices around the globe.

Apple’s App Store

Apple’s mobile devices and tablets can only install applications from one source: the Apple App Store. While Android devices can install applications from a variety of different sources, Apple devices cannot. While many different bookies create iPhone and iPad betting apps, it’s only certain markets, such as the UK, that have access to them.

Mobile Betting Sites VS Betting Apps

While everyone’s main focus is betting apps, almost every betting site out there can be accessed through your mobile phone’s or tablet’s browser. In most cases, you’ll find that a bookmaker’s mobile site will have almost all the same functionality of the desktop site, and will look almost identical to the bookie’s apps (if they’ve released any).

There is one major differences between a sportsbook’s app and their mobile site: apps are installed on your device, meaning layout, logos, and more are stored on your device, which can drastically reduce load times and lead to a smoother and more fluid experience.

However, even “slow” mobile betting sites are still pretty quick. You’re unlikely to be left waiting more than a second or two for a mobile betting site to load. Sure, betting apps might be a split second faster, but that doesn’t usually make too much of a difference.

Plenty of punters say they prefer betting apps to mobile betting sites because of the ability to have the app sitting on your home screen, just a single tap away. What a lot of people don’t know, though, is that they can do this with mobile betting sites too. This means that if your favourite bookmaker doesn’t have a betting app, you can still have their mobile betting site hanging out on your home screen, just a tap away.

How to Add a Web Shortcut to Homescreen on iOS

  1. Open the betting site in Safari on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap the Share arrow
  3. Tap the Add to Homescreen button
  4. You’ll be given the option to edit the name of the bookmark, but you can leave it set to the default if you like
  5. Tap Add and it will be on your homescreen

Adding a Web Shortcut to Homescreen on Android Devices

  1. Open the betting site in the Google Chrome browser
  2. Tap the Menu button (found in the top right corner)
  3. Tap Add to Homescreen and the bookmark will be waiting for you the next time you head to your home screen!

When it comes to using tablet devices, depending on your sportsbook of choice, you might be better off with the website rather than an app. On Android, in particular, apps don’t always scale very well when moving from phone to tablet, while websites are, by design, far more adaptable to different screen sizes and aspect ratios.

It used to be that tons of sportsbooks offered app-exclusive offers, such as free bets. However, these have become a lot more difficult to find in recent days. While you might find a few mobile-exclusive offers out there, many of these will be available on both the mobile betting site and the betting app.

Mobile Betting Safety

When your betting account can live in your pocket, security suddenly becomes even more important. Most people have far more sensitive information saved on their phones than they do their laptops or desktop PCs.

Funds and Deposits

The vast majority of betting apps will allow you to use the same selection of payment methods as the desktop site. Some of these, eWallets in particular, have their own apps that include additional security features.

For example, if you’re making a betting app deposit with PayPal, the PayPal app will open and will ask you to provide biometric confirmation (if your device supports that) to confirm the payment. This means that PayPal betting deposits are even safer on mobile devices than they are on desktop.

Additionally, both Apple and Android have a feature built into them that stores your card details. This means that if you make a deposit using a VISA debit card, for example, your device can auto complete your card information into the betting app, and will ask for confirmation (biometric or password) before doing so. This can speed up deposits and avoid you from having to fiddle around with your debit cards while out in public.

Privacy and Security

Your phone is much more likely to get lost or stolen than your desktop PC is, and you don’t want your betting account falling into the wrong hands. It’s extremely important that you secure your device if you’re going to be using betting apps. A simple password is already enough to keep people out of your data, but if your phone supports biometric security measures, like a fingerprint scanner or face unlock, then you’re golden. Of course, if your device gets stolen or lost, we recommend locking your device using the features built into either iOS or Android.

We also feel that it’s important to mention that the same security questions we ask when looking at sportsbooks in general. Make sure that your betting app of choice comes from a sportsbook that’s fully licensed by an organization like the UK Gambling Commission and follows what we consider to be normal security measures in the iGaming industry. Again, if you’re not sure what the standards are, just read our review of the sportsbook in question, where we’ve already assessed their security features.

Why I Can’t Find any Apps in the App Store?

Both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store have different regulations in different regions, as well as having to abide by each region’s laws. At the time of writing, betting apps are mostly available in the UK App Store and Play Store.

If you’re outside the UK, then it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to download betting apps directly from the App Store or the Play Store. Android users, however, are lucky enough to have another option available to them.

While iPhone and iPad users are restricted to only being able to install apps that come from the Apple App Store, Android is a much more flexible operating system. Android devices have the ability to install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store, in a practice known as “sideloading.” In fact, many bookies make their Android apps available for direct download so that users can sideload them onto their devices.

How do I Sideload Betting Apps on my Android Phone or Tablet?

For those who have never sideloaded an app before or don’t feel all that comfortable with consumer technology, sideloading betting apps can seem overwhelming. However, it’s actually quite a simple process. All you need to do is follow our step-by-step guide below and you’ll have your betting app up and running in no time!

Note! If you’re in a country where betting apps are allowed in the Play Store, you do NOT need to sideload betting apps. Always check to see whether the betting app in question is available in the Play Store before attempting to sideload the betting app.

  1. Download the betting app from the betting site. This will be in the form of a .apk
  2. If you downloaded the betting app apk on a device other than the mobile device you want to install it on, transfer it to your mobile or tablet via USB, Bluetooth, or through a cloud storage
  3. On your Android device, go to Settings > Security
  4. Tap on “Install Apps from Unknown Sources
  5. Using your device’s file explorer, go to the downloaded betting app apk (this will likely be in your “Downloads” folder)
  6. Tap on the betting app apk, accept the app permissions, and tap “install
  7. The app has now been installed! Feel free to open it and sign in!

Betting App FAQs

What’s the best betting app?
With so many betting apps out there, there’s no way we can crown any single one as “the best” without ending up leaving out the needs and wants of a large portion of our readership. What we have done, however, was narrow it down to our picks for the top 7 betting apps on the market. All of these apps have their own, unique benefits, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them.
How do I install betting apps on Android?
Android users used to have to sideload betting apps, but Google now allows betting apps into the Play Store in the UK. For more information about what betting apps are available for Android and how to find them in the Play store, read our guide to Android betting apps.
Are betting apps available on iPhone?
Yes! Every entry in our top 7 betting apps list is available to install on iPhones, as long as you’re living in the UK. We recommend taking a look at our guide to iOS betting apps for more information about how to find iPhone betting apps as well as how to install them.
Why can’t I see any betting apps on the App Store / Play Store?
If you’re looking for betting apps in the App Store or the Play Store and can’t find any, they probably aren’t available in your region. If you’re outside the UK, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to install them directly from the official stores. Read more about this and about sideloading betting apps in our section on not being able to find betting apps in the app store.
