Australian Open Golf History

The Australian Open (golf) is the most prestigious tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. First held over 100 years ago in 1904 at The Australian Club in Sydney, this is the tournament that every young Aussie golfer dreams of winning. Australian players have a fine record in the Australian Open and Cameron Davis lifted the coveted Stonehaven Cup in 2017.

The Australian Golf Club in Sydney has hosted the tournament a record 20 times (last in 2017) and Gary Player (7 wins) and Jack Nicklaus (6 wins) are the most successful players of all time. Greg Norman and Ivo Whitton are the most decorated Aussies with a total of 5 wins apiece. Gary Player achieved the best score when winning with a total of -28 in 1965, a record that looks unlikely to be broken.

Up to £100 in Bet Credits for new customers at bet365. Min deposit £5 and 1x settled bet requirement to release Bet Credits. Min odds, bet and payment method exclusions apply. Returns exclude Bet Credits stake. Time limits and T&Cs apply.

2018 Australian Open Golf Main Contenders

The 2018 Australian Golf Open will be held at The Lakes in Sydney, one of the country’s finest courses.  The Lakes last hosted the tournament from 2010-12 and Aussie golfers triumphed on all three occasions. The home challenge should be strong again this year, but there will be some quality players competing from all around the world. Matt Kuchar has already been confirmed, and other stars look sure to follow. We discuss the chances of some of the main Australian Open Golf contenders below.

Jason Day

PGA World Ranking: 10.

Jason Day has long been established as one of the best golfers on the planet. His star may have faded slightly, especially in the majors, in 2018 but he will be strongly fancied to triumph in the Australian Open. The Aussie superstar has yet to taste success in his home tournament, and he could only manage 5th in it last year. He is the top ranked Aussie golfer right now and he is sure to be a short price for a tournament he is likely desperate to win.

Marc Leishman

PGA World Ranking: 22.

After Jason Day the next highest ranked Aussie golfer is Marc Leishman who is in the No.22 spot. The 34 year old Victoria born golfer has three wins on the PGA Tour to his name, with two of those wins coming in 2017. The one thing missing from Leishman’s impressive CV is a major home victory, and he didn’t compete in the Australian Open for the past couple of years. It is looking likely that he will line up in 2018 though, and if he does he could be Jason Day’s biggest threat.

Matt Kuchar

PGA World Ranking: 31.

One of the highest profile international players to commit to the Australian Open so far is American star Matt Kuchar. Kuch, as he is affectionately known, has had a fine season and he achieved a top 10 finish at The Open Championship earlier this year. He has won a total of 13 tournaments as a professional, with the last win coming in Fiji in 2015. The 40 year old would love to add another Southern Hemisphere tournament in November, and he will be trying to do exactly that at The Lakes. He may be 40 years old now, but he is still well capable of mixing it with the best.

Adam Scott

PGA World Ranking: 38.

No matter what he does for the rest of his career, Adam Scott is guaranteed a spot in the Aussie Golfing Hall Of Fame. Given his career achievements it is hard to believe he is still only 38 years old and he isn’t finished winning yet. He won his first and only major in 2013 when he triumphed in The Masters, but he is a consistent challenger in all the major tournaments. He won the Australian Open back in 2009, one of his 29 career tournament wins. If he plays in 2018, he will be fancied by many to add another Australian Open to his trophy cabinet.

Cameron Smith

PGA World Ranking: 39.

Cameron Smith is the most promising Australian golfer to emerge in recent years. The 25 year old Brisbane man has already managed to win two professional titles, including the Australian PGA Championship back in 2017. He was brilliant in The Masters this season, finishing in the top 5 and he also has a T4 finish in the US Open on his CV. His star could continue to rise back on home turf in November, and he will fancy his chances in the 2018 Australian Open.

New online customers only, min £10/ €10 stake, win only, min odds 1/2, free bets paid as 3 X £10/€10, 30 day expiry, free bet/payment method/player/country restrictions apply. Full T&C Here.
