History and Format of the Ryder Cup

Although there were two unofficial golf tournaments organized by Samuel Ryder in the early 20’s, the first official Ryder Cup was played in 1927. From its beginning, the cup was played every two years, with the exception between the 1999 and 2002 Ryder Cup renditions. The first 22 Ryder Cup installments pitted the US against Great Britain and Ireland. The US was much more successful, winning 18 out of the 22, with one famous tie contest in 1969. 1979 marked the first year of the today known format of Team USA vs Team Europe. In the following matches leading up to this year, the Europeans managed to hold their own more than well, winning ten matches, with the US winning eight, and one tie match in 1989.

The current format of the cup has been in place since 1979. It pits the 12 best US golfers against the 12 best European golfers in a three-day tournament. The first team that manages to clinch at least 14.5 points out of the 28 total, wins the cup. Every shot matters as the cup is played under a stroke-play format. There are a total of three different types of match play golf in the Ryder Cup. The first two days of the cup include four four-ball matches and four foursome matches, with 16 points up for grabs. The last day of the cup is when all of the 12 players from both teams play singles matchups. Each player can play a maximum of five matches, spread out to two four-balls, two foursomes and one singles match.

Ryder Cup Past Winners

Currently, the Europeans are on a roll, winning seven out of the last ten Ryder Cup editions. However, team USA are the current champions, having managed to snap team Europe’s dominations in 2016. Here are the previous ten Ryder Cup winners, including the locations they were hosted.

What happens if a Ryder Cup match ends in a tie?

The table illustration above shows the ten previous winners of the Ryder Cup, but what happens in the case of a tie match? Well, if the final score after three days is a tie, the tie goes to the team defending the trophy, meaning that no team is called the winner, but the defending champion gets to keep the cup. However unlikely this result may seem, there were two ties so far, in 1969 and 1989.

Ryder Cup Outright Markets

The simplest and most obvious bets are those revolving around outright markets. This type of betting involves putting a basic bet on which team you think will win the cup. When it comes to this tournament, in particular, outright betting on Ryder Cup has only a few options. You can place an outright bet on whether you think team USA or team Europe will win, or if the cup will end in a tie. At the end of this three-day event, you will know if your outright bet has come through. Besides placing outright bets, you can also bet on individual matchups and singles matches during the cup, but this requires knowing the players and having a really good understanding of all of the aspects. Then there are also the Ryder Cup specials, which we’ll get on in the next section.

Ryder Cup Trends and Specials

Different online betting sites have different Ryder Cup specials. These can include bets like ‘Who will win the first point’. These types of bet can be very interesting and entertaining as anything can happen on any hole on the course. Will the player make the right shot, or will he hit a rough patch of land? Maybe their shot will end up in a hazard. What about betting on a hole in one scenario? In the almost century-long history of the Ryder Cup, there have been only six holes in one. The odds are really generous for this specials market, but the history is stacked against you. One thing is sure, online betting sites do an excellent job in providing a wide variety of different wages punter can place on the Ryder Cup.

These specials can really add to the overall excitement of betting on Ryder Cup, but also provide great opportunities to make even more money. If you’re a golf betting enthusiast and look forward to betting on Ryder Cup, make sure you browse bookmakers and find the one with the best specials and odds for you.

18+ www.begambleaware.org Minimum deposit £10. You must wager your bonus money 3x to make it withdrawable at minimum odds of 1.40 (2/5) in Sportsbook, 25x for Casino. Bonus will expire after 30 days of opt-in. Further T&Cs Apply.

Best Players in the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup teams are picked based on rankings but also through a wild card system. 9 players are selected based on their rankings and tournament successes, while the remaining three are picked by the team captains. The captains can also pick several vice-captains that assist them with tactical advice and strategies throughout the tournament.

When you look at the 12-man rosters of both teams, you can find a couple of really famous and recognizable names, especially in the team USA. From a pure betting perspective, the Americans certainly have the best players, but this doesn’t mean success is guaranteed for their side. Recent history has shown that, although the European players are often underdogs, they know how to win. This year, team Europe faces slightly unfavorable odds, mainly because their best golfers aren’t playing at their best form right now. Here are the best players in the Ryder Cup:

Francesco Molinari - Team Europe

Molinari is the first ever Italian golfer to become a Major champion. Molinari qualified as the first player on the European Points List and is among the top six players in the world. He is currently considered as the golfer who is entering the Ryder Cup in the best form and is one of the most interesting players to watch in the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Sergio Garcia - Team Europe

Sergio Garcia enters the Ryder Cup as a wildcard player, called up by the team Europe captain. Although he doesn’t have as many trophies as some other players on the team, he was selected mainly because of his heart and determination. Described by captain Thomas Bjorn as the heart and soul of the team, Garcia is expected to give his all in the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Tiger Woods - Team USA

Selected as a wild card by the US team captain, Tiger Woods is without any doubts a very valuable asset to the team. Although he is not amongst the best ranked US players, he is certainly one of the most successful and experienced ones. During his career, Tiger Woods has won an incredible 79 events on the Tour and a total of 14 major championships.

Jim Furyk - Team USA

Jim Furyk is the team USA captain in the 2018 Ryder Cup. This is his first stint as team captain, though he has extensive experience performing in the cup. Jim Furyk has made an astounding nine starts for team USA in the Ryder Cup, second only to Phil Mickelson, who is also participating this year.

How to bet on the Ryder Cup?

Betting on Ryder Cup can be very profitable if you understand how the competition works and how different factors can impact the outcome. Below are the three most important things you need to keep in mind when betting on Ryder Cup.

Get Familiar with the Ryder Cup Format

The first tip may seem obvious, but it is also the most important one. Ryder Cup uses a unique format and getting familiar with it will give you the edge you need in order to be successful at betting on it. There are three separate formats that last over the course of three days, be sure to study them, and also read up on the players involved in them, especially in the singles event that’s on the third day of the cup.

Know the Venue

The Ryder Cup venue changes with each cup installment. It can also play a huge role in deciding the final outcome of the cup, and this goes beyond the general home team advantage rule. The specifications of the course it itself are often one of the most important factors. Depending on if the course is short or long, wide or narrow, it can have a positive or negative effect on both teams.

Know the Current Form of the Players

Betting on the Ryder Cup goes much deeper than just placing a bet on the better-ranked player. This event gathers the best of the best and there are a lot of factors that can decide the matchup. Knowing which player excels in what area of play or which type of course, as well as the current player form leading up to the event can all make the difference in making the right bet.
