Six Nations 2019 – The Main Contenders
Ireland were comfortable winners of the Six Nations in 2024, completing the Grand Slam by beating all five opponents. They are the clear favourites for the 2019 Six Nations but England, Wales and even Scotland might have something to say about that. France need to improve, while Italy look booked for the Wooden Spoon yet again. Our rugby experts reveal their thoughts on the prospects of the main contenders for the 2019 Six Nations below.
Ireland
- Head Coach: Joe Schmidt.
- Key Men: Sean O’Brien, Conor Murray.
Ireland entered something of a new era after the retirements of both Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll. Joe Schmidt has rallied the troops and he has assembled a side that dominated the Six Nations in 2024. Ireland look strong all over the pitch. They have loads of power up front and no shortage of skill and speed in the back division. Conor Murray pulls the strings and he is probably the best scrum half in the world right now. There is no doubt that Ireland are the team to beat in the 2019 Six Nations and they are the 5/4 outright favourites with William Hill.
Best Ireland Six Nations Outright Odds: 5/4 William Hill.
England
- Head Coach: Eddie Jones.
- Key Men: Owen Farrell, Billy Vunipola.
When Eddie Jones initially took charge of England his impact was immediate. England looked near unbeatable in his first season in charge in 2016, strolling to the Grand Slam. They added another Six Nations title in 2017. However, things have not gone to plan in the last year and the pressure is rising on Jones. They need the likes of Owen Farrell, Billy Vunipola and George Ford to step up their games if they are to mount a challenge for the 2019 Six Nations. If you think Jones can turn the tide you can back England outright for the 2019 Six Nations at odds of 5/2 with Ladbrokes.
Wales
- Head Coach: Warren Gatland.
- Key Men: Leigh Halfpenny, Bradley Davies.
Wales filled the runner up spot behind Ireland in the 2024 Six Nations and they could be set to fill the same position in 2019. Warren Gatland has done a great job with this Welsh team and they play a lovely brand of rugby. Wales is a proud rugby union nation and in Leigh Halfpenny they have one of the best dead ball kickers in the game. George North is always a threat out wide, while the likes of Bradley Davies and Taulupe Faletau provide power up front. On their day, this Welsh team is capable of beating anyone, and they look a big price for the 2019 Six Nations at odds of 15/2 with bet365.
Best Wales Six Nations Outright Odds: 15/2 bet365.
Scotland
- Head Coach: Gregor Townsend.
- Key Men: Stuart Hogg, David Denton.
Scotland are a fast improving team who could be a surprise package in the 2019 Six Nations. Gregor Townsend’s men had an impressive campaign in 2024, winning three of their five Six Nations matches and finishing in 3rd spot behind Ireland and Wales. In Stuart Hogg they have one of the best full backs in the world and he is a joy to watch when he attacks from deep. Up front the likes of David Denton and Tim Swinson will carry the fight to their opponents. This Scotland team could well outperform their odds of 11/1 with Boylesports in the 2019 Six Nations Championship.
Best Scotland Six Nations Outright Odds: 11/1 Boylesports.
France
- Head Coach: Jacques Brunel.
- Key Men: Morgan Parra, Yoann Maestri.
French rugby has been on the decline in recent years due to a string of poor managerial appointments. Jacques Brunel is the latest to have been tasked with reviving the fortunes of France’s international team. They won just two of their five matches in the 2024 Six Nations, beating Italy and a poor England team. In fairness to France, they also pushed Ireland close and it looks as though Brunel has them moving in the right direction. With talented players like Parra, Maestri, Medard and Bastareaud in their ranks they should be doing much better though. The odds of 12/1 available about France winning the 2019 Six Nations look just about right.
Best France Six Nations Outright Odds: 12/1 William Hill.

Six Nations 2019 Tip-The Irish Will Be Tough To Beat
We were extremely impressed by Ireland last season and this young team is only going to get better. The Grand Slam winners will be desperate to defend their crown and it is hard to see who can dethrone them. England need to get their act together and we think they are way underpriced at 5/2. Wales and Scotland could pose a bigger threat to Ireland, but we think the men in green will be too strong for their opponents. At odds of 5/4 with William Hill we think Ireland are worth backing for the 2019 Six Nations.

Six Nations History And Facts
The Six Nations was originally known as the Home Nations Championship, a tournament first held in 1883 and contested by England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. In 1910 France joined the party and the tournament was then known as the Five Nations. That was changed again in 2000 when Italy were invited to compete and since then the competition has been called the Six Nations.
England are the most successful team historically, with 28 total wins since 1883. France have 17 titles, while Ireland are next best with 14. England and France also lead the way when it comes to Grand Slams, with 13 and 9 respectively. The record points scorer in Six Nations history is Ronan O’Gara with 557, while another Irishman Brian O’Driscoll holds the record for most tries with 26 scored.
Italian legend Sergio Parisse is currently tied with O’Driscoll for the most Six Nations appearances with 65. The Italian captain is likely to break that record in 2019 as he is still playing. England’s 80 point haul vs Italy in 2001 is the highest score ever achieved in an individual Six Nations match. England also scored a record number of tries in 2001 with 29.
