This Week’s Football Action

In Football by on August 29, 2015

Overview

As any avid sports fan is well aware, most of the major football leagues have already begun as the month of August comes to a close; The English Premier League, Spanish Primera Division, German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, the Italian Seria A and many more.

The EPL started with a flurry of surprises and exciting matches between newcomers, the regular mid-table finishers, and the favorites to win the title itself. Last week’s games were definitely tight, as we saw six drawn games, out of the ten played. Most notably, Manchester United was stopped in their tracks by Newcastle on home turf, where they drew 0-0. The week before that, what was expected to be a close derby between Manchester City and Chelsea ended up as a 3-0 triumph for The Citizens.

As we head in to this week’s matches, the EPL table is still in a turbulent state, City are the leaders with a flawless record of 3-0-0 and 8:0 goal difference. Right below them sits none other than Leicester City, which triumphed in their first two games, and drew their last one. Liverpool, United and Arsenal are lined up below Leicester, all sitting with the same amount of points, with the goal difference being the crucial factor in separating them. The defending champion, Chelsea, is sitting on 10th place, having won one match, drawn one, and lost one.

Chelsea and Manchester City will look for a triumph on their home stadiums, against the underdogs Crystal Palace, and Watford, respectively. Liverpool will look for a win on Anfield versus West Ham, a match which they’ll come in as favorites. Totenham and Everton will face off in what should be a good game as always, because of the natural unpredictability of their matchup.

If we go by the odds, The Citizens should further reaffirm their leadership on the table, while the rest will play a game of catch up, or try to, as the beginning of this season is rounding up.

In the Bundesliga, many fans have rejoiced as Dortmund have finally gotten back in shape and started this season in marvelous style, winning both of their games with an overall goal difference of 8:0. Wolfsburg is the current leader of the table, which may change as Bayern are expected to triumph against Leverkusen in the classic derby coming up this Saturday.

The 2015-16 season of the Spanish Primera Division is still in its infancy stage, and the league table is hardly an indicator of how it’s going to develop in the following couple of weeks. To be more exact, Villareal, Eibar and Celta Vigo are sitting atop the table. The favorites coming in, Barcelona, hardly won against Bilbao in their opening game with a result of 1:0. The most notably surprise is Real Madrid drawing to Gijon on away ground, with a score of 0:0. The eternal rivals, Madrid and Barca, will be looking for wins this week against Betis and Malaga, respectively. Atletico Madrid is in the same spot as Barca, and they’ll be looking for their second win of the season against Sevilla on Sunday, in what will certainly be a tough match.

This sums up our brief preview of this weekend’s games in the EPL, Bundesliga and Primera Division. Make sure to follow the action closely, as there will certainly be interesting matches up in store for fans around the globe.
